Trump calls Mattis 'sort of a Democrat' and says he 'may leave'

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis speaks during a meeting with Greek Minister of Defense Panagiotis Kammenos at the Pentagon in Washington Trump Unsure If Defense Chief Jim Mattis Will Step Down: 'He's Sort Of A Democrat'

In the "60 Minutes" interview, Trump alluded to upcoming changes in his cabinet.

In a clip of the interview that is set to air in full Sunday evening, Trump said Mattis, a former Marine Corps general, hasn't told him he planned to leave the administration but it "could be that he is".

Lesley Stahl: I wanna read you his resume, okay?

President Trump: - a very good relationship with him. I had lunch with him two days ago. It could be that he is.

"Frankly, I like General Mattis", Trump said. We get along very well. That the President's vanishingly rare appearance on a nonpartisan news program had resulted in a spectacle in which randomly assorted questions were bulldozed by a man eager to speak, and in which the interviewer generally left the viewers to decide what those answers meant without the benefit of meaningful follow-up, made the point clear. "People leave. That's Washington".

Trump: "When I say Obama did it, you don't want to talk about it".

"I'm changing things around".

"There are some people that I'm not happy with". CNN reported in June on differences between Trump and Mattis that was leading to anxiety in the Pentagon and raising the possibility that Mattis might eventually leave the administration.

Perhaps the most telling part of this is that Trump views the mere idea of "punishing" as being "pretty harsh".

Sears, once a retail titan, files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Sears Holdings made it official early Monday morning, announcing the retailer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Sales at the company's established locations tumbled almost four per cent during its fiscal second quarter.

Invited to PLEDGE THAT HE WON'T SHUT DOWN THE MUELLER INVESTIGATION, Trump declined, saying, "I don't pledge anything".

"I'm not a baby", he added.

Lesley Stahl: Tell everybody what's at stake here. "I don't have to pledge to you".

He would not say whether he wanted Mr Mattis gone. In a statement after the book's publication, Mattis said that "the contemptuous words about the president attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence". Something's changing and it'll change back again. But I don't know that it's manmade.

He said that while he was satisfied with the performance of certain members of his administration, there are others "that I'm not thrilled with". I don't want to lose millions and millions of jobs. "I'm fully in favor of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, but I don't wanna be taken advantage of".

Donald Trump is not the end of America's innocence.

Last month, Mattis appeared to be caught off-guard by statements from National Security Advisor John Bolton that the estimated 2,000 USA troops in Syria would not be withdrawn until Iranian forces and Iranian-allied militias also left the country. "I want them to negotiate a fair deal with us".

"But I rely on them, it's not in our country."

The speculation that Trump and Mattis would eventually be at odds began shortly after the Defense Secretary took the oath of office.
