Global warming to leave us crying in our costlier beer

Climate change could cause beer prices to soar - study Beer shortage looming?

Forty-three percent of Americans said beer was their favorite type of alochol in 2016, according to Gallup, with 32 percent saying the same about wine and another 20 percent sticking by hard liquor.

Their predictions, published today (October 15) in Nature Plants, include a drop of 3 percent to 17 percent in barley yields by 2099, a decrease in the supply of beer, and sharp increases in prices.

The study actually predicted that northern United States and China could actually see an increase in the amount of barley harvested - but the USA may decide to "increase their exports to meet demand in other countries" instead of making more beer.

By volume, beer is by far the most popular alcoholic drink in the world, with almost 200 billion litres produced in 2017.

The findings come a week after a dire United Nations report described the consequences of unsafe levels of climate change including worsening food and water shortages, heat waves, sea level rise, and disease.

In the United Kingdom, beer consumption could fall between 0.37 billion and 1.33 billion litres, while the price could as much as double. "If you don't want that to happen - if you still want a few pints of beer - then the only way to do it is to mitigate climate change".

Instead, the researchers provided a tangible example of how global warming will impact quality of life by showing its effects on a favorite beverage of the working class: Beer.

They are also expected to negotiate forming combined teams for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and other global events. Moon also said the North would permanently abolish key missile facilities in the presence of foreign experts.

And now, this most recent study says one of the most popular forms of alcohol is squarely in the crosshairs of global warming.

Research predicts heatwaves and droughts could cause a fall in barley yields of up to 17 percent across the leading grain-producing regions of Australia, Asia, Europe and the US.

During the most severe climate events, the results indicate that global beer consumption would decline by 16%, or 29 billion litres - roughly equal to the total annual beer consumption in the U.S. - and that beer prices would on average double.

The next step was to estimate how these "barley supply shocks" would affect the production and price of beer in each region. He added that "there is something fundamental in the cross-cultural appreciation of beer".

"Climate change may undermine the availability, stability and access to "luxury" goods", said Guan.

As the adage goes, "It's all fun and games until the beer runs out".

The biggest importers are China, Saudi Arabia and Iran, with three top brewing nations - Netherlands, Belgium and Japan - just behind.
