'OK to be white': Australian government senators condemn 'anti-white racism'

Australian Senate Votes Against Motion That 'It Is Okay To Be White' Error behind 'It's OK to be white' vote

The Morrison government's leader in the Senate has issued an embarrassing apology, claiming his team of government senators only supported a One Nation motion saying it was "okay to be white" because of an "administrative error".

"We should have opposed the motion when it came up in the Senate yesterday", he said.

The assistant minister for global development and the Pacific, Anne Ruston, made a short statement to the Senate that "the government condemns all forms of racism".

Pauline Hanson on Monday brought forward the motion, which also declared "anti-white" racism was on the rise in Australia.

The motion was supported by government MPs, but narrowly defeated, 31 votes to 28, after after several crossbench senators rejected the motion calling for the Senate to acknowledge "the deplorable rise in anti-white racism and attacks on Western civilisation".

Overnight, Senator Cormann said the government deplored racism of any kind.

Senator Hanson tells Ben Fordham "I always have been against racism, right from the very beginning".

The French weather service, Meteo France , issued a warning of flood risk for all surrounding departments for 24 hours. National emergency services spokesman Michael Bernier said 13 people had been killed and one person was still missing.

Labor also voted against the motion and attacked Coalition senators for backing it.

"As a result of an administrative process failure, the government senators in the chamber ended up, on advice, voting in support of the motion", Senator Cormann told reporters.

One of those who opposed the bill, Justice Party Senator Derryn Hinch, called it a "headline-grabbing stunt".

Hinch accused Hanson and her former senator Fraser Anning of engaging in "a race to see who can be the biggest, the loudest, racist bigot in their contest to see who can get to the bottom of the sewer first".

"In the Senate debate, the leader of the Greens, Richard Di Natale, noted that the slogan "'it's OK to be white' ... has got a long history in the white supremacist movement".

"Labour senator Kristina Keneally had sharp words for the Liberals - Australia's conservative-leaning governing party, who backed the motion, accusing them of "[siding] with One Nation... on a motion straight out of the alt-right playbook".

The phrase has a long history amongst the so-called alt-right in the U.S., and is regularly used to provoke outrage by right-wing trolls in political debates.
