Trump issued cease and desist by Prince's estate

Prince's Estate Urges Donald Trump To Stop Playing Prince estate shuts down use of his music by Trump team at rallies

The Prince estate issued a statement Thursday requesting that Donald Trump cease using "Purple Rain" at the president's rallies.

During his life, Prince was very guarded about the unauthorized use of his music and rarely allowed it to be played without his permission.

A spokesperson for the estate told the AP a request had been made to the President to discontinue use of the song.

At recent pre-Election Day rallies, like the one Trump held in MS last week, the playlist at the event has featured Prince's "Purple Rain".

The family of Prince has told Donald Trump to stop playing the late icon's songs at rallies, following a phalanx of other angry artists who have told the U.S. president to pull the plug. Freed, who is also known as Dr. Funkenberry, is a radio host who was friendly with Prince and who maintains ties with his family.

Prince, who died in 2016, was notorious for keeping a tight leash on the rights to his music. Anil Dash, founder of the tech company Glitch and a royal Prince fan, tweeted, "Alright, Prince estate: nobody has more experience shutting down misuses of an artist's work than you do".

Trump continues to regularly host rallies for his 2020 presidential campaign, and for other Republicans running for election.

But during a question-and-answer session on Twitter two years ago Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger was quoted as saying there was nothing he could do under USA law to stop Trump playing his music.

A White House spokeswoman referred questions to the Trump campaign, which didn't immediately respond. Follow INSIDER on Facebook.
