A Turkish paper has alleged that a team of 15 Saudi men flew into Istanbul on October 2, hours before Khashoggi was last seen entering the consulate, describing the men as an assassination squad.

The high-level Turkish official told the AP that police found "certain evidence" of Khashoggi's slaying at the consulate, without elaborating.

Tubaigy began to cut Khashoggi's body up on a table in the study while he was still alive, the Turkish source said.

"There was no attempt to interrogate him".

One CNN source cautioned that the report was still being prepared and could change, while another said it will likely conclude the operation took place without clearance, and that those involved will be held responsible.

Saudi officials say he left the building, but have provided no evidence to support this.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday said he hopes a reasonable opinion will be reached as soon as possible in the investigation, adding the search in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul will continue with the investigation also looking into toxic materials.

The consul, Mohammad al-Otaibi has now left Turkey, local media report.

But after Saudia Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman both denied any knowledge of Khashoggi's fate in their conversations with USA state secretary Mike Pompeo, Trump said, "Here we go again with you're guilty until proven innocent".

Trump has taken a less aggressive stance toward the Saudis, suggesting on Monday after speaking with Saudi King Salman that perhaps "rogue killers" were behind the disappearance of Khashoggi, a sharp critic of the crown prince.

Religious hate crime surges by 40% in England and Wales
Worryingly, the number of closed prosecutions dropped by over 2 per cent from 14,480 in 2016/17 to 14,151 in 2017/18. The combined 2015/16 to 2017/18 dataset estimates that there were 30,000 sexual orientation hate crimes per year.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Saudi Arabia to talk to King Salman and the 33-year-old crown prince about the fate of the journalist who wrote critically about the Saudis for the Washington Post.

The comments come after Trump said he had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and been assured that a "full" probe into the disappearance of a critical journalist was underway. "If they knew about it, that would be bad", he said, reflecting on the matter to Fox Business.

The president declined to weigh in, once again, on the believability of the claims that Turkey says are bogus.

The president spoke with Saudi King Salman on Monday, who Trump said insisted he did not have any knowledge of what happened to Khashoggi. The secretary of state noted that the Saudi leaders, while denying knowledge of anything that occurred inside the consulate, had committed to accountability "including for Saudi Arabia's senior leaders or senior officials".

"Secretary Pompeo conveyed the importance of a conducting a thorough, transparent and timely investigation", said Heather Nauert, the State Department spokeswoman.

Pompeo was to have a dinner Tuesday night with Prince Mohammed and was expected to fly to Turkey on Wednesday. Trump has resisted any action, pointing to huge USA weapons deals pending with Saudi Arabia and saying that sanctions could end up hurting the American economy.

USA officials began predicting over the weekend, however, that the Saudis would inevitably admit complicity in the death of Khashoggi and claim a "botched operation", said one person familiar with the discussions.

Britain, France and Germany also released a rare joint statement saying they were treating Khashoggi's disappearance "with the utmost seriousness" and calling for a "credible investigation".

Within days of Khashoggi's disappearance, Turkish investigators said they had pieced together most of the mystery, concluding that he had been killed inside the consulate and dismembered.
