Amazon has revealed plans to create more than 1,000 new "highly skilled roles" across three United Kingdom cities.

It will be Amazon's first United Kingdom corporate office outside of London and house staff working across software development, machine learning, plus research and development.

The new office, based in the Hanover Building, will accommodate at least 600 staff.

A new office will also be opened in Manchester.

Secretary of State for International Trade, The Rt Hon Liam Fox MP, said: "Ensuring that the world's best and brightest companies continue to invest and innovate in the United Kingdom is at the heart of our Global Britain agenda".

The development centre in Edinburgh will gain the capacity for 250 new roles on three floors in the city's Waverley Gate building. The roles will mainly be in research and development, it was said.

Workers in Edinburgh will focus on advertising technology and personalised shopping while those at Cambridge will be working on Amazon devices such as the Echo.

"Since developing the world's first stored program computer, Manchester has continued to pioneer when it comes to computer science, software programming and development - making it the ideal business destination for global brands like Amazon".

This will set the shopping giant on course to have 27,500 workers in the United Kingdom, with 6,500 jobs across its corporate, Amazon Web Services, and Research and Development divisions by the end of 2019.

Amazon's investment in United Kingdom innovation enables businesses large and small to boost their productivity and reach millions of customers around the world.

CURRENTLY, ROUGHLY 0.041 per cent of the United Kingdom population is employed by Amazon.
