Serena Williams' coach says in-match coaching would boost tennis

Although Mouratoglou did not directly address Williams' meltdown in a column in the latest edition of Britain's Tennishead magazine, he wrote: "One very good thing has happened as a effect of Serena Williams' experience in the US Open final: people throughout tennis are again discussing the whole issue of on-court coaching".

Those who argue against in-match coaching - and believe rules against it should be enforced more rigidly - say that lessens the individual, go-it-alone nature of tennis.

In September, Williams was charged with a code violation for receiving on-court coaching from Mouratoglou during the final match of the 2018 US Open.

"Coaching is a vital component of any sporting performance".

The US Open has been experimenting with on-court coaching in the past two years, allowing it during its qualifying and junior events.

In a lengthy statement shared on Twitter on Thursday, the Frenchman stressed that the US Open final controversy highlighted the problem of coaching, after Williams was penalized for receiving instructions from Mouratoglou. It is time to authorize and structure-something that WTA has initiated in 2008 when it allowed on-court coaching for all tournaments apart from the Grand Slams- practices that have been tolerated all over the world for decades.

Harbaugh rips 'bush league' Michigan State after pregame scuffle
The Wolverines will now enjoy a weekend off before a big home date at Michigan Stadium against Penn State on Saturday, Nov. 3. Bush and two MI teammates were involved in an altercation with the Spartans two hours before the game.

The dispute started when Ramos gave Williams a code violation after ruling that Mouratoglou had been attempting to coach her during the match.

"Occasionally the players are punished for it, but for the most part they are not, because the federations are perfectly aware of the situation and don't ask umpires for a strict application of the rule".

"You see it all the time in team sports, with coaches instructing their players from the sidelines", Mouratoglou said.

"If people consider that a step too far, I would advocate the WTA rule, though I would prefer it if coaches could come on the court more often", he said.

"Look at how many times players look towards their box during a match". "If we don't get people involved, then tennis is only ever going to be followed by pure tennis lovers. You want spectators and TV viewers to have opinions about the players - and the coaches - and to know who they like and don't like", added Mouratoglou. Sometimes the players don't like to hear what their coaches are saying, but this all adds to the drama'. "Some do it after every single point".
