Another child has died amid a deadly virus outbreak at a New Jersey rehabilitation, bringing the total number of deaths to nine, officials said Sunday.

Seven other children have died and 16 others who have survived all contracted adenovirus while being treated at the Wanaque Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Haskell, according to the Department of Health. The child had become ill before October 22, according to officials.

It is the latest death of an individual who had a confirmed case of adenovirus and had become ill before October 22.

Health officials found minor hand-washing deficiencies at the facility during visits last week, and have been working with the center on infection-control issues, the health department said. Another death Friday of a medically frail resident has not been confirmed by laboratory results as being linked to the illness, according to the NJDOH.

Adenovirus usually poses little risk for healthy people. The infections can affect the tissue linings of the respiratory tract, eyes, intestines, urinary tract and nervous system, causing illnesses ranging from a cold to bronchitis to pneumonia to pink eye.

Officials say the outbreak occurred between September 26 and October 22.

'Another Suspicious Package' To CNN Is Intercepted In Atlanta
The CNN mail bomb was part of a spree of explosive devices sent to prominent Democrats and critics of President Donald Trump . Another package was addressed to former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who does analysis for the network.

"Unfortunately, the particular strain of adenovirus (#7) in this outbreak is affecting medically fragile children with severely compromised immune systems", Kirgan said.

"As part of an ongoing effort to ensure all infection control measures are followed, we are taking extra steps to monitor residents and staff for any signs of infectious illness", Elnahal said.

The facility is still not admitting any new patients and won't until the outbreak is over.

The state Department of Health Communicable Disease Service has been on site monitoring the outbreak.

"The facility has agreed to cease new admissions for the duration of the outbreak", the department said.
