Health Secretary reveals new measures to better protect NHS staff

9th November – CardiffNext Steps for Mental Health Services in Wales - Jail sentences for assaults on NHS staff to double, health secretary to announce

'NHS staff dedicate their lives to protecting and caring for us in our times of greatest need and for any one of them to be subject to aggression or violence is completely unacceptable.

A £2 billion increase in mental health funding announced in yesterday's Budget has been welcomed by the chief executive of the NHS trust which runs mental health services in Peterborough.

One in eight NHS employees have experienced violence from patients, their relatives or the public in the past year, which is the highest figure for five years, according to the latest NHS staff survey.

'I have made it my personal mission to ensure NHS staff feel safe and secure at work'.

Where staff have been attacked, health trusts will be encouraged to work with the police and the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure offenders are prosecuted quickly.

"Whilst we note the chancellor's announcement on the future of PFI, a number of trusts with particularly onerous existing PFI contracts will need further financial support if they are to meet the prime minister's stipulation that no NHS organisation should be in financial deficit over the medium term".

There is now no centralised system to record assaults on NHS staff and hospitals are left to collect their own data.

The DHSC said training in de-escalation and conflict resolution will be assessed to ensure it is up to date and effective, with improvements made where necessary.

$132K Raised To Support ACS Fight Against Breast Cancer
Jill Fricker, CEO of Komen Colorado , said people should also consider the systematic issues surrounding health disparities. Black women survivors are working to raise awareness about breast health and breast cancer in their communities.

But with £20bn increase in funding already promised for the NHS back in June, there were no more major announcements for the health industry in what was a positive Budget.

"It is a sad fact that nearly none of the perpetrators receive custodial sentences when they are prosecuted for assaulting our staff", the association's managing director Martin Flaherty said.

Simon Dukes, chief executive of the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee, agreed that little detail about future health funding had been revealed during the budget announcement, stating: "It is clear that prevention, and how we can reduce demand for services and help people to live longer, healthier lives, remains a key focus".

Kim Sunley, national officer for the Royal College of Nursing, said: "Nurses and health care workers understand their roles aren't risk-free but, to many, it still seems as if the threat of physical violence is a daily reality".

Sara Gorton, Head of Health for Unison, added: "No-one should be abused, threatened or attacked at work - especially when all they're trying to do is help people".

A new law came into force last month that doubled the maximum prison sentence for members of the public who assault NHS staff or emergency service workers from six months to a year, although many believe that still isn't long enough.

Global Positioning System will be protected by a new "zero tolerance" policy aiming to reduce the number of assaults on NHS staff.

"This can be understandable".
