PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE: Comprehensive Study Finds High Cell Phone Use Causes Heart Tumors In Rats

Male rats, exposed to high levels of radio frequency radiation (RFR), like that used in 2G and 3G cell phones, developed cancerous heart tumours. However, just seven months ago the National Toxicology Program (NTP) released an alarming study stating that cell phone radiation could be responsible for tumors in male rats.
In June, at a meeting of scientific counselors to the toxicology agency, Donald Stump, one of the members, anxious that the study "will be vulnerable to criticism that it was conducted using outdated technology".
These studies did not investigate the types of RFR used for Wi-Fi or 5G networks. "The exposures used in the studies can not be compared directly to the exposure that humans experience when using a cell phone", Bucher said in a news release.
Senior scientists stated, "The exposure used in the studies can not be compared directly to the exposure that humans experience when using a cell phone". The NTP does have concerns the study will be criticized because they did use outdated technology, so they're working on building exposure chambers that will allow them to evaluate newer technologies, The New York Times reports."We do think the tumor responses here are real", John Bucher, senior scientist of the NTP, told BuzzFeed News during a telephone briefing to reporters. "In addition, the exposure levels and durations in our studies were greater than what people experience", Bucher explained.
The lowest exposure level used in the studies was equal to the maximum local tissue exposure now allowed for mobile phone users but this power level rarely occurs with typical use. And the highest radiation level used in the study was four times higher than the maximum level allowed in people.
"We studied the effects of almost lifetime exposures to two different types, or modulations, of RFR (GSM and CDMA) used in cellular telephone networks in the United States in male and female rats and mice to identify potential toxicity or cancer-related hazards".
One of the strengths of the studies was that scientists could control how much radiation the rats and mice were getting, which isn't possible when studying how humans use cell phones, Wyde said. Exposure to RFR began in the womb for rats and at 5 to 6 weeks old for mice, and continued for up to two years, or most of their natural lifetime. The animals were exposed for up to two years, for about nine hours a day (with 10 minutes of exposure and 10-minute breaks in between).
The $30 million, decades-long study has involved 3,000 rats and mice, some of which were irradiated while pregnant and the pups then also exposed to the cellphone radiation.
Unexpectedly, the study also found that, overall, the male rats exposed to the cellphone radiation lived longer than the rats who were not exposed to the radiation.
"Consequently", says Melnick, "I believe that new wireless technologies, including 5G, should be adequately tested before their implementation leads to unacceptable levels of human exposures and increased health risks".
According to Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, the U.S. FDA's director for Devices and Radiological Health, such animal studies are important in the discussion, but it was not created to test the safety of cellphones in humans and could therefore not be used to draw conclusions for humans.
