The video, which appeared on social media, showed a cardboard model of the tower with cut-outs of residents in the windows being set alight on a bonfire while those watching laughed and made jokes.

The Metropolitan police have now arrested five men - two of who were aged 49 and the other three were age 19, 46 and 55 - it was said the men did hand themselves in on Monday 5 November, however the identities of the five men has not been disclosed.

It was initially shared on the encrypted messaging service Whatsapp but is now being circulated on Facebook and Twitter.

Certain individuals in the video are heard saying "help me" and "stay in your flat", in a series of mocking remarks as the flames take hold of the effigy.

Another member of the bonfire group can be heard saying that the fire "started on the 10th floor" and that they should have placed the box "upside down".

He said the Met's Grenfell Tower investigation team is "taking this matter very seriously" and that any offences committed "will be fully investigated". It's still unclear what caused the fire, though safety experts have told a public inquiry that combustible external cladding helped the fire to quickly spread.

In a statement, the Justice4Grenfell campaign group said: "This was an unnecessary sickening act of hate against those who, through no fault of their own, have experienced the worst since 14 June 2017". She said: "To disrespect those who lost their lives at Grenfell Tower, as well as their families and loved ones, is utterly unacceptable". "As much as I hate to share this video I want them identified".

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said: "This is an appalling and disturbing video".

Grenfell United, the official organisation for bereaved, survivors and community of Grenfell Tower, said: "It's a disgusting video".

"It can not be justified on any level".

A spokesman added: "We are disgusted and shocked at the inhumanity and callousness of those involved in this video".

It comes after Theresa May condemned the video, which emerged online, calling it "utterly unacceptable".
