AMD EPYC 'Rome' to feature up to 64 Zen 2 cores

If the claims hold up, the second-generation processor has a shot at being the highest performing datacenter CPU in 2019.

AMD Next Horizon in San Francisco, California, Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

One of AMD's mainstay features is socket compatibility for those that have already adopted previous generation processors. Compared to Zen, AMD said to expect twice the performance and four times the floating point performance per socket. According to AMD, the performance uplift is 25% over their current 12nm Zen+ offering. If you've been tracking the x86 wars for the last couple of decades, you'll know such a development is an exceedingly rare occurrence.

Following up Intel's announcement of new Xeon server processors recently, AMD is firing a return salvo of their own to lay claim to more real estate in the enterprise CPU market. Papermaster summed it up thusly: "We're in the business of high performance".

"By using the Zen 2 architecture and 7nm, on desktops", said analyst Pat Moorhead of Moor Insights.

With these "ROME" EPYC CPUs, the new architecture design also features improved branch prediction, instruction prefetch and re-optimized micro-op instruction cache, which has also been increased in size.

These EPYC "Rome" CPUs are now being sampled by AMD with server manufacturers and customers. But because of continued delays in Intel's 10nm effort, AMD lucked out; it will be shipping some of the fastest and most power-efficient silicon in the datacenter next year.

One of the strengths across all of the Zen and Zen+ processors from AMD has been their use of Infinity Fabric, allowing a single die to be connected with others for different products. The processor will be having multiple CPU chiplets produced using TSMC's 7 nm manufacturing process and an I/O die produced using the 14 nm fabrication process.

Yet they do pave the way for the next wave of Ryzen processors. Although the former isn't of much interest to us since the announced-so-far Vega graphics chips won't be made available to consumers, the CPU news is much more pressing as it furthers rumors that AMD's next-generation architecture will make it not only competitive with Intel on cost, but on overall raw power too. The chips will be manufactured by TSMC on its leading 7nm node, which the company says will give it a significant advantage over Intel, which is now struggling with its own 10nm process.
