The South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) on Thursday called on the global relations department to ensure local journalist Angela Quintal and her colleague Muthoki Mumo's passports were returned immediately.

The International Relations Department says they have since been released, but details of exactly what transpired are still unclear. South Africa's High Cmmissioner to Tanzania Mr Thami Mseleku is set to meet them and discuss about the events and then engage with the country's authorities.

The Mail & Guardian said that according to Mabaya, there are a number of issues that the South African High Commissioner will want to be addressed by Tanzanian authorities. He told SAFM on Thursday morning that the South African High Commissioner had spoken to Quintal and her colleague who had been returned to their hotel rooms.

The duo were arrested in their hotel room in Dar es Salaam and had their passports confiscated.

A South African news site, News24, reported that a tweet had been sent from Ms Quintal's account appearing to allay fears by confirming that she and Ms Mumo had been released but her family claimed that someone else may have been in possession of her phone.

Fifth body found under collapsed buildings in French city of Marseille
Abdou Ali, 34, came in search of his mother after she did not come to collect her youngest son from school on Monday afternoon. A young bar waiter watched the scene with tears in his eyes, anxious for news of an Italian woman who lived in the building.

Quintal tweeted before 1am on Tuesday morning that she and her colleague had been released.

Their communication devices were also taken away and used to relay falsified information.

The officials - reportedly from Tanzania Immigration authority are said to have searched the pair's belongings and would not return their passports when asked.

Mabaya said their release came "after a lot of calls" but neither of the women had been given back their passport. They were in the country on a mission for CPJ.
