Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as 28-year-old Ian David Long. Police found the shooter dead inside, possibly from a self-inflicted wound. Authorities said he deployed a smoke device and used a Glock. Dean said the suspect had an extended magazine on the weapon.

Long was on active duty with the Marines from August 2008 to March 2013, according to the Department of Defense.

Investigators believe Long arrived Wednesday night at the bar in a auto, shot a security guard who was standing outside, and then stepped inside.

Sheriff Geoff Dean, who choked back tears while talking about Helus, said his friend had been talking to his wife when the shooting call came in.

"As soon as he walked in he had ideal form", said Whittler, who added she grew up in a military family.

Authorities said early Thursday that they were still working to determine a motive.

He said he has no doubt Helus' tactics at the scene "were sound when he went in". Law enforcement and emergency crews flooded the scene and police urged the public to avoid the area. At least 10 to 15 others were injured.

Sergeant Helus was shot and severely wounded.

Helus went in because gunshots still were being fired, Dean said. Dean said Helus undoubtedly saved lives by going in to confront the gunman.

He said Sergeant Helus was on the SWAT team for much of his career and worked in narcotics and investigations.

"He died a hero because he went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean said.

Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow did not say how the gunman died.

A witness told KABC-TV that there were many young people "having a great time" in the bar when a man entered and "started shooting". I hear chairs being thrown out the window.

"He had ... what looked like a bandanna on the bottom on his face, sunglasses, black hoodie, dark jeans".

Whittler explained that the crowd then began running for an exit, and she was caught on the floor and trampled on.

No other information was immediately available.

"It's a horrific incident, it's part of the horrors that are happening in our country and everyone and I think it's impossible to put any logic or sense to the senseless", he added.

"I started hearing these big pops". Kuredjian said he could not confirm whether any of those shot were dead or the severity of their injuries.

The station said one person was seen - apparently lifeless - on the ground outside the bar's entrance. He said they watched the gunman shoot the bouncer and then move through the bar.

"A gentleman walked in the front door and shot the girl that was behind the counter".

The California sheriff's sergeant first on the scene at Wednesday night's mass shooting heard gunfire booming inside the bar and instinctively ran into the crowded venue - where he "died a hero", one of 12 people killed by a former Marine who ended the massacre by committing suicide.

"It was chaos, people jumping out of windows, people hopping over gates to get out" Mr Steinwender told KABC.

Housley was a student at Pepperdine University.

"The University offers its deepest condolences and is praying for everyone involved in tonight's tragic events", it tweeted.

His son, Cody, 22, was there with friends - and while his friends got out, they didn't know where Cody was, he told CNN and HLN.

"I can not believe it has happened to my family", he said.

"While I was running away, people were dropping around me", Spady said.

Jason said Cody will leave behind a legacy of love, and laughter.
