Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice was quick to try to bring some perspective to the uproar over a video of some Ottawa Senators players that was recorded during an Uber ride and leaked online.

The Uber driver is heard asking what team the players play for near the beginning of the video and Wideman, seated in the passenger seat, replies: "Ottawa".

While it's obvious the players didn't know they were being recorded and the publication of the video online seems like a blatant invasion of privacy, it's still out there and should serve as a reminder to all professional athletes.

Neither the Ottawa Citizen nor parent company Postmedia Network Inc. immediately responded to a request for comment.

The video also prompted a response from Uber Canada general manager Rob Khazzam on Twitter, though he did not specifically mention the incident.

The video appears to have been taken without the players' knowledge.

Forward Matt Duchene, defensemen Chris Wideman and Thomas Chabot as well as recently acquired Chris Tierney were among the players making fun of the 5-6-3 Ottawa squad.

"Marty Raymond, the only coach in National Hockey League history to have the worst power-play and the worst PK within a calendar year", said Duchene, a forward who has spent the last year in Ottawa after arriving in a trade from Colorado last season.

At one point, Duchene says he hasn't paid attention in any of Raymond's meetings for three weeks.

On the tape several Sens players, who were smart to be calling an Uber and not driving, were talking trash about the team and coaches while being driven home.

The players apologized to Raymond in a statement Monday.

The Senators, in a statement, called the video a "privacy breach".

Make no mistake, openly flambéing your coaches and team performance isn't a great idea, but the Uber driver making that clearly private conversation public is next-level shady. We are grateful for the support of our fans and organization.

The Senators are now 29th in the league in penalty killing at 68.8 per cent.

"Once we got that first (goal) I thought we did a good job pushing back and imposing our game on them", Duchene said.

Senators Head Coach Guy Boucher also apologized on behalf of the team.

"We want to apologize publicly to Marty Raymond, our teammates and coaches for our comments in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 29", the statement reads.

"Here's the other thing, too", he said, "we don't change anything, ever".

"Filming or recording passengers without their consent is totally unacceptable and if reported/detected we will investigate", he said.
