US Democrats win House, Republicans keep Senate

President Donald Trump looks at his watch near the end of a campaign rally Monday US Democrats win House, Republicans keep Senate

President Donald Trump celebrated the midterm elections as a "tremendous success" for his administration after Republicans expanded their majority in the Senate, maintained an edge in governorships, and handed control of the House to the Democrats by a slim margin instead of the predicted blowout to the so-called "blue wave". He said in a tweet Wednesday that if they do, the Republican-controlled Senate may investigate Democrats.

By the time President Donald Trump and his team tucked into hamburgers and hot dogs at a White House election watch party on Tuesday night, he was ready for the bad news. However, the new Democratic House majority will end the Republican Party's dominance in Washington for the final two years of Trump's first term with major questions looming about health care, immigration and government spending.

Trump said in a wide-ranging news conference Wednesday that he doesn't want to release his taxes because they are under a "continuous audit".

The news for the next year or longer seems likely to be dominated by a steady stream of coverage of the people closest to Trump as they testify before Congress under duress, or under a grant of immunity, or coverage of their refusal to speak at all for fear of incriminating themselves.

But Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, who is set to regain the speaker's gavel come January, said her party has a duty to root out fraud and wrongdoing in government.

Democrats will now be able to block legislation and light a fire under Trump´s feet with investigations of his opaque finances and Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Voters in Minnesota and MI elected the first two Muslim women to serve in the U.S. Congress: Ilhan Omar, a former refugee who fled Somalia's civil war, and Rashida Tlaib, a Detroit-born Palestinian-American.

Aides said the president was delighted at the projected victories by Republican Senate candidates he had campaigned for, such as Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Rick Scott of Florida, Mike Braun of IN and Josh Hawley of Missouri, as well as Republican Brian Kemp's victory IN the Georgia governor's race.

Former Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder got it exactly right on Facebook when he wrote: "Every Democratic senator in a competitive race who voted against Justice Kavanaugh went down to defeat: Donnelly, Heitkamp, Nelson, McCaskill".

He seized on scenes of a caravan of Central American migrants heading through Mexico for the USA, mused on ending the constitutional guarantee of citizenship to all people born in the United States and ran a television advertisement, deemed too provocative to air by mainstream networks, that linked Democrats to a criminal who was an undocumented immigrant.

The repoprter also visited beforehand to film an interview, and it went out on mational television during the royal visit. It does seem to me insanity if we are going to bequeath this completely polluted, damaged and destroyed world to them ...

Trump also has sent soldiers to the Mexican border and threatened to have illegal immigrants shot if they throw stones.

"And Barbara Comstock was another one", he said. "I'm voting for candidates that I believe have the capacity to unite people rather than divide".

Of the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation that has shadowed his administration for more than 18 months, Trump said, "I could end it right now" but "I let it go on".

"It's disappointing but it's not surprising", said Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway.

"I am so honoured to share both the ballot and the stage with the many visionary, bold women who have raised their hand to run for public office", said Ayanna Pressley, who became the first black woman elected to Congress from MA.

Having seized control of the House of Representatives, Democrats will get the chance to convert their rhetoric into action.

Trump is already anticipating as much - and gave a hint earlier this week of how he will react to Democrats' demands.

"Trump is the dividing force in this election", noted the USA Today newspaper.
