Nationwide protests held in support of Mueller probe

Midterm Election Results Coverage On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Fears for Russia probe as Trump fires Jeff Sessions

After news broke Wednesday that Trump had forced Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, leaders of the group United for Action of Central Florida made a decision to act.

District Attorney Larry Krasner was among those at the rally, demanding Whitaker recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation due to conflicts of interest. Trump also labeled a question from a reporter about whether he wants Whitaker to restrict Mueller's investigation as "stupid".

"The [midterm] election results had barely come in, and Donald Trump railroaded his attorney general into resigning" Wyden said.

Legal scholars, meanwhile, have debated the constitutionality of Whitaker's appointment, with some lawyers saying it is illegal because Whitaker has not been confirmed by the Senate.

"The rule of law is disappearing before our eyes", tweeted Sally Yates, a deputy attorney general under Trump's predecessor Barack Obama and briefly in the top job under Trump before he sacked her.

Still, the President praised Whitaker as "very highly thought of" and said that Whitaker is only taking heat because "anybody that works for me, they do a number on him". But, in another interview that year, Whitaker also said he felt there was a red line for the probe.

After months of bitter attacks on Sessions, Trump on Wednesday announced via Twitter that the former Alabama senator was being replaced.

I would like to get into two of the things that you reported today.

While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Conway explained President Trump is not planning to use the resignation as a way to shut down the Mueller probe.

The Chico Fire Department said: "Firefighters continue to actively engage the fire in order to protect life and property". The department said 30,000 people had been evacuated in the area and as many as 30,000 homes were threatened.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., has walked back the vow he made past year that there would be "holy hell to pay" if President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

He's been described as a Trump loyalist and a possible threat to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe. "Mueller has come up to a red line in the Russian Federation 2016 election-meddling investigation that he is dangerously close to crossing", he thundered.

As attorney general, and earlier as White House counsel, he faced criticism for drafting controversial rules for military war tribunals, seeking to limit the legal rights of detainees at the USA prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

"People ... across this country gathered today to say ..."

But with Sessions being pushed out yesterday, that oversight now reverts to his replacement, his former chief of staff, and now the acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker.

On Friday as he left for Paris, the president dismissed the argument that Whitaker's past comments might disqualify him from overseeing the special counsel.

In a July 10, 2017, appearance on CNN, Whitaker shrugged off the idea that the Trump Tower meeting could be part of a criminal conspiracy.

In the president's orbit, there remains some concern about his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., though there are no outward indications that charges are imminent, according to a Republican close to the White House not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.
