California wildfires: 150,000 evacuated as death toll climbs

Residents have now been ordered to evacuate from several more towns to the west of Thousand Oaks, including Calabasas immediately south of Highway 101 and Malibu on the coast, as well as from the western edge of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that the fire is heading towards the ocean, punctuating the message with the declaration: "Imminent threat!"

While the cause of the fire wasn't known, Pacific Gas & Electric Company told state regulators it experienced an outage on an electrical transmission line near Paradise about 15 minutes before the blaze broke out.

In total, there are now 14 wildfires blazing in California and acting governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency.

Wildfires burned out of control on Friday across California, killing at least nine people in a mountain town and forcing residents to flee the upscale beach community of Malibu in the face of a monster fire storm.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were located in vehicles that were overcome by the Camp Fire", said a statement, adding that they had yet to be identified.

"This was a rapidly moving fire", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told the Chico Enterprise-Record.

Four of the hospital's employees were briefly trapped in the basement and rescued by California Highway Patrol officers, Kinney said.

Much of Southern California was under a red flag warning from the fires as gusty winds were expected to reach between 20 and 40 miles per hour, and in some areas, up to 65 miles per hour.

At least in the case of the Hill Fire, the location and direction of the Hill Fire is playing to firefighters' advantage, according to Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen.

The Woolsey Fire, which started about 2:30 p.m. Thursday near the former Rocketdyne Complex in the Simi Hills area, had spread to 35,000 acres by sunset Friday.

People fleeing that blaze have cloggedroadways already prone to traffic.

Thousands of cars stood bumper to bumper, trying to ply their way slowly south to safer parts - all while a bank of thick gray smoke crept over the horizon.
