Transport minister Jo Johnson dropped his bombshell news in a recorded video message released this afternoon.

Mrs May also had to deal with a challenge from Northern Ireland's DUP whose support she needs to command a Commons majority.

In a tale of two Johnsons, he has followed his former foreign secretary sibling to the backbenches over Brexit - but in doing so is seeking a very different outcome.

Quitting as junior transport minister, Johnson called May's Brexit plans "delusional" and said he could not vote for the deal she is expected to unveil in parliament within weeks.

"We can stop this Tory Brexit but, ultimately, it should be for the people to decide", he said.

The Labour MP and former leadership contender Chuku Umunna said in a tweet that the party would never be forgiven if it ignored the wishes of Labour members and opted not to call for a second referendum. Theresa May has said the withdrawal deal is 95% done - but there is no agreement yet on how to guarantee no hard border in Northern Ireland.

About 700,000 people rallied for a new Brexit referendum last month, the second largest march in recent memory, with consternation centred on the government's apparent failure to secure an acceptable deal.

Ahead of a conference of the Eurosceptic Bruges Group on Saturday, Tory MP Mark Francois said further ministerial resignations could not be ruled out.

"The prime minister has told colleagues this week we should aim to conclude the withdrawal agreement as soon as possible but we will not do that at any cost".

The referendum, he said, should have three choices, endorse Ms May's deal, leave without a deal, or remain in the EU.

After receiving a first class Oxford degree in modern history in 1994, Mr Johnson worked as an investment banker before going into the media.

'I think this is so important that it's up to MPs to take a stand, ' Mr Johnson, the brother of Boris Johnson, told BBC Radio.

He says Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan would damage Britain's national interest.

Boris Johnson, who himself resigned over May's Brexit plans, backed his brother's decision, saying: "We may not have agreed about Brexit but we are united in dismay at the intellectually and politically indefensible of the UK position". "If these negotiations have achieved little else, they have at least united us in fraternal dismay".

Walker said he did not think a disorderly Brexit was likely, but he added that if it did come to that the rights of European Union citizens in Britain would be protected.

Asked by German magazine Der Spiegel if he would stop Brexit if he could, Corbyn said: "We can't stop it".
