New Jersey couple, homeless vet made up fundraising campaign

Couple homeless man accused of making up story that earned $400K in donations Homeless vet, couple allegedly made up story for GoFundMe scam

The alleged scam began last August, when former Marine Bobbitt reportedly gave McClure $20 for gas after her auto ran out along an interstate in Philadelphia. But Bobbitt became homeless again after D'Amico told him in June that he had to leave the property.

The fund quickly grew to more than $400,000, with donations from more than 14,000 people.

Mark D'Amico, Kate McClure, both of Florence, and the homeless man, Johnny Bobbitt, will face charges including conspiracy and theft by deception. The couple turned themselves in to local authorities on Wednesday. Bobbitt remains at large.

Bobbitt's attorney, Jacqueline Promislo, told The New York Post that the couple started to spend the money right after depositing it into their bank account on expensive shoes and pricey vacations.

WTXF reports the Burlington County Prosecutor will announce more information at a press conference at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

McClure and D'Amico insisted they had given Bobbitt around $200,000, with lawyers for GoFundMe stepping in.

Bobbitt reportedly was able to purchase a camper and SUV to the tune of about $75,000, but Bobbitt reportedly no longer has access to either one of those assets.

McClure and D'Amico have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing or misusing any of the money.

Police raided the couple's home in September and seized several items, including a BMW. "It's important to remember that our platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means that in the rare case that GoFundMe, law enforcement or a user finds campaigns are misused, donors and beneficiaries are protected".
