Healthy Baby Born To Woman Who Received World’s First Deceased Womb Transplant

Doctors hold a baby girl born to a mother who received a uterus from a deceased donor in Brazil. A novel transplantation procedure may help more infertile women become pregnant First baby born via uterus transplanted from dead donor

A Brazilian woman was the first to give birth after receiving a womb transplant from a deceased donor, Reuters reported.

So far, there have been 39 uterus transplants from live donors around the world, resulting in 11 births.

The 34-year-old woman from São Paulo, Brazil, underwent the procedure in 2016 under the guidance of Dr Dani Ejzenberg and his research team at the University Hospital of Sao Paulo.

Ten attempts were made - in the United States, the Czech Republic, and Turkey - before the success reported this week.

At seven months and 20 days - when the case study report was submitted to The Lancet - the baby girl was continuing to breastfeed and weighed 7.2kg.

Details of the first case were published Tuesday in the medical journal Lancet.

It is estimated that between 10 to 15 percent of couples of reproductive age worldwide are affected by infertility. They cite women with inoperable fibroids, or abnormal uterine growths, those who have experienced embryo implantation failure and those who have received pelvic radiation as categories of women who may be able to benefit from uterus transplantation in the future. "While uterine transplantation sounds extreme, it can be indicated in women born without a uterus, or in women who have a non-functional or surgically-absent uterus".

All that is known about her donor is that she was 45, had three successful vaginal deliveries, and had granted use of her organs prior to her death from brain haemorrhage.

"The numbers of people willing and committed to donate organs upon their own deaths are far larger than those of live donors, offering a much wider potential donor population", he said.

Rudy Giuliani has no idea how the internet works
In a completely unrelated note, in January 2017 Giuliani had been named by Trump as an "informal adviser on cybersecurity". When publishing his tweet, Giuliani did not notice that Twitter had turned it blue, indicating it was clickable.

"The surgery involved is extensive, and there is the needed for antirejection medication post-operatively", she said. The recipient tolerated the transplant relatively well thanks to immunosuppression drugs, other treatments and constant monitoring.

Those odds will now doubt continue to improve with time, but given the scarcity of living donors in general, the number of people willing to give up their uterus while they're still kicking isn't exactly huge.

The major risks associated with this process are organ rejection through blood type mismatch, inadequate immune system suppression or severe infection of the transplanted organ.

A baby girl was born, delivered via caesarean section, at 35 weeks and three days, weighing 2,550 grams (nearly 6 lbs), the case study reported. Likewise, the mother's health required months of ongoing monitoring to ensure that she didn't suffer any adverse effects from having the uterus transplanted and then later removed.

After the birth both patient and baby appeared healthy and well.

The baby was born at 36 weeks old, with no complications.

"We must congratulate the authors", commented Dr Srdjan Saso, an honorary clinical lecturer in obstetrics and gynaecology at Imperial College London, describing the findings as "extremely exciting".

"This is a great alternative compared to live donor uterus transplants and therefore a really historic achievement", said Dr. Tullius, who is also a professor of surgery at Harvard University.

Richard Kennedy, president of the International Federation of Fertility Societies, also welcomed the announcement but sounded a note of caution.
