Cases of ‘polio-like’ illness that’s paralyzing children appears to have ‘peaked,’ CDC says

The number of cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) reported across the US may have topped out for the year, the CDC said. The children with definitive AFM also had many white blood cells in their spinal cords, and less protein in their cerebral spinal fluid than the children with alternative diagnoses.
Furthermore, the vast majority of the cases of AFM are occurring between August and October, when these and other respiratory viruses predominate; over 90 percent of these cases are preceded by a mild respiratory illness or fever consistent with a viral infection.
In its weekly update on the disease, the CDC says there have been 134 confirmed cases in 33 states this year.
"That pattern appears to be repeating in 2018 because states have reported fewer [patients under investigation] over the past couple of weeks", the agency said.
With this most recent stream of AFM cases, CDC advisors reported their frustration with the way the agency has handled the disease.
The younger our children are, and the more helpless and reliant on us they are, the more we worry about their health and safety.
But viruses can attack the nerves directly as polio virus does. Or they can set off an auto-immune reaction that damage nerves, as Guillain-Barre syndrome does.
Since the outbreak started, the CDC has been updating both the confirmed case counts and the number of cases under investigation. These viruses are so common, and the manifestation of AFM is so rare and unpredictable, that typical precautionary practices like hand washing can't prevent it. AFM doesn't seem to be occurring in clusters, meaning that the condition itself is not contagious from one person to another.
With AFM, CDC has seen a pattern of higher numbers of confirmed cases every 2 years: In 2014, CDC confirmed about 120 cases of AFM; in 2015, 22 cases; in 2016, the number of confirmed cases increased to 149 and in 2017, the number of confirmed cases was 33.
