The chief financial officer of Huawei has been arrested in Canada - reportedly in relation to sanctions-busting in Iran rather than any concerns about espionage by the Chinese telecommunications equipment giant.

A bail hearing for Wanzhou Meng, who is also Huawei's deputy chairwoman of the board, has been set for Friday, Justice Department spokesperson Ian McLeod said in a statement Wednesday.

"The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", the statement said.

As there is a publication ban in effect, which was requested by Meng, the department declined to provide any further detail of the extradition. "The ban was sought by Ms. Meng", McLeod added.

The report said the USA had been keeping a close eye on Huawei's alleged shipping of U.S. products to Iran and other countries in violation of sanction laws.

"The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the United States and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou". "The ban was being sought by Ms. Meng".

Ms. Meng's arrest comes amid a year-long US government campaign against a company it views as a national-security threat. She was detained while transferring between flights, the firm said.

"Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the United Nations, U.S. and European Union".

The US imposed harsher sanctions on Iran earlier this year, as the Trump administration looked to restrict worldwide business with the Iranian government.

Huawei Technologies, launched in 1987 in Shenzhen China, has been the largest telecommunication equipment producer in the world since 2012.

Several months after Donald Trump signed a bill into law preventing USA government agencies from buying certain products from the Chinese electronics manufacturer, Huawei's CFO has been arrested in Canada.

GCSB Minister Andrew Little said the decision to turn down the overseas network provider was because the technology was too risky - not because the company is Chinese.

Huawei also made a public statement saying it has already won 22 commercial contracts to supply 5G equipment to telecom operators. The maximum capacity 4G sites in the UK's busiest hotspots lay the foundation for 5G network switch on in 2019, EE said.
