Her family, from Wickford, near Basildon, said they spoke to her "most days", describing her silence as "completely out of character".

A missing persons report was filed on Wednesday and "initial investigations are underway", New Zealand Police told Yahoo7.

She has not returned to her hostel room in Auckland New Zealand, ' her older brother Michael Millane wrote on Facebook. We all feel a bit helpless from over here.

"We know some of her property was there (the backpackers) and we have that, but we don't exactly what she had so we don't know what she has on her or if there's anything missing", he said.

The Foreign Office said it was providing support to Auckland police.

She was last seen on Saturday about 7.15pm around SkyCity.

"Grace is a 22-year-old European woman with brown hair and brown eyes". She's approximately 5ft 6in (168cm) in height, and 58kg.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard, of Auckland City Police, said Ms Millane's father was on his way to New Zealand, and said her family were understandably "distraught".

A number of unconfirmed sightings have been reported to the force.

Various sightings have her wearing either black top, blues jeans and red sneakers, or a black dress with white shoes.

He is due to arrive in New Zealand from England tomorrow to help search efforts.

"Where she was standing, it was really weird and she was by herself, nobody around just a girl on her own", she said. They're on the other side of the world and they haven't heard from her, ' he said.

The radio silence was "unusual" for Grace, Declan Millane said.

"I just saw a young girl and I thought she had like a raincoat. she had a bigger sort of jacket, not a fashion like one".

She had previously been in "constant contact" with her family using messaging service 'WhatsApp'.

Grace Millane had been in New Zealand for about two weeks.

Mr Beard said none of her roommates at the backpackers were with her on Saturday evening and there was sufficient evidence to suggest she was going to go back to the hostel to collect the items she had there.

They became anxious when she failed to contact them on her birthday...

However she was travelling alone when she came to New Zealand about two weeks ago.

She had paid up to stay at Base Backpackers until December 8.
