The lines of mourners have been steady since the president's casket was brought to Washington Monday.

Breaking from custom, the current president, Donald Trump, did not speak, per the wishes of the Bush family. John McCain's funeral earlier this year.

Bush then shook hands with former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, causing her to smile when he passed her what appeared to be a piece of candy.

Meanwhile, Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, were also seated in the front row with the former leaders of the U.S during the service.

As the world mourns the death of former President George H.W. Bush, ABC News contributor Cokie Roberts remembered his time as president and what distinguished him from the modern political climate on this week's Powerhouse Politics podcast.

"When the history books are written, they will say that George H.W. Bush was a great president of the United States, a diplomat of unmatched skill, a commander-in-chief of formidable accomplishment, and a gentleman who executed the duties of his office with dignity and honor", Bush said.

"We're going to miss you".

He became emotional while describing "the best father a son or daughter could have".
