Massive outage at O2 affects 32m customers

The company confirmed the network issues on Twitter, saying: "Our technical teams are investigating reports of issues when using data".

"We'd encourage our customers to use Wifi wherever they can and we apologise for the inconvenience caused".

Downdetector, a website that tracks digital outages, said 1,662 complaints had been made before 7am, with the outages affecting London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and many other towns and cities.

"One of our third party suppliers has identified a global software issue in their system which has impacted us", it said.

O2 is the second largest mobile operator in the United Kingdom; the company says it has around 32 million connections to its network and also hosts virtual network operators, such as Sky Mobile, Lyca Mobile and giffgaff.

However, some users are reporting that they're also unable to make voice calls or send text messages, so the full scope of the problem is unclear at present. It said other operators across the world were also affected.

Millions of people have been having problems with their mobile phones this morning, after the O2 network went down. "We are really sorry and working as hard and as fast as we can to fix this".
