Now senators who believe even more strongly that Mohammed helped coordinate Khashoggi's killing will explore legislative options to punish Saudi Arabia, including bills or amendments that could withdraw USA support of Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, impose additional sanctions, or end weapons sales to the country. After briefing members of the Senate on November 28, Pompeo said "there is no direct reporting connecting the Saudi crown prince to the order to murder Jamal Khashoggi".

The office of Istanbul's prosecutor on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for two Saudi officials for their alleged links to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom's consulate in Turkey. "You have to be willfully blind" not to see it. Lindsey Graham (SC) disagreed.

Graham said the United States should come down like a "ton of bricks" on the Saudis, adding that he can no longer do business with Saudi Arabia and "cannot support arm sales to Saudi Arabia" if the "crazy" crown prince is still running the country.

He also said: "There's not a smoking gun, there's a smoking saw".

The prime minister explained at the time that he had a "frank" conversation with the prince on the killing, Saudi Arabia's involvement in Yemen and jailed activists.

"If someone said Secretary Mattis or Pompeo were dishonest, they just don't know those individuals", Stewart told CNN.

He went on to suggest that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary James Mattis were being "technical" "good soldiers" for the goals of the Trump administration.

"There are lots of Republicans who are going to try to water this down, but they'll have to find 50 votes, and I'm not sure that they have 50 votes for a substitute".

Haspel appeared on Capitol Hill on Tuesday to brief a dozen or so senators on intelligence the CIA had about Khashoggi's death at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey two months ago.

Saudi authorities said the agents who killed Khashoggi exceeded their authority. Todd Young (R) said the administration was "clearly and directly blown off" by Riyadh. "There is no way we're gonna continue to do business with Saudi Arabia as if this never happened".

Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels, has spiraled into the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The pair were removed from their positions in October while Saudi Arabia has detained 21 people and says it is seeking the death penalty for five over the slaying, which sparked global outrage. The Saudi coalition faced criticism for indiscriminately bombing civilian targets and infrastructure, though the Trump administration argues the situation would be much worse without USA assistance.

The Saudi embassy in Washington confirmed that Khalid had returned to the US, NBC said, while a Saudi official said he was unable to attend the funeral because of a plane delay.

Blunt told reporters at the time that the House was unlikley to move on the resolution, and he didn't think a Senate debate on Yemen would be particularly helpful in encouraging the peace process along.
