The Czech Republic carmaker has unveiled the all-new Skoda Scala hatchback.
"At first glance the Scala looks as a more mature model than the Rapid, so it is likely to serve as a stronger competitor to the established models in its segment such as the VW Golf, Ford Focus, Opel Astra and others".
Skoda chief executive Bernhard Maier said: "We are starting a new chapter in Skoda's compact vehicle range with the new Skoda Scala".
Speaking at the launch, Skoda's chairman of the board of management Bernhard Maier confirmed its future product aims, starting with the new Scala. "We're convinced that the Scala has the best chance of redefining the A segment for Skoda". That's due to a long 2,649mm wheelbase while the auto itself is 4,362mm in length, 1,793mm wide and 1,471mm tall.
The interior is also quite bland, but it does debut new tablet infotainment on top of the dash, which at 9.2 inches (optional, standard is only 6.5in) is among the biggest in the class. At 467 litres the boot is also class-leading, following the brand's usual trick of offering more space than similarly priced rival models. The updated design language brought by the Vision RS study is obvious in the Scala, which also adopts new colors and materials. The new hatchback will get a single diesel powertrain option, in the form of a 113bhp, 1.6-litre motor.
There are three petrol engines available: a 70kW/175Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder with a five-speed manual, a more powerful 85kW/200Nm version of that engine, and a 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder.
He added: "The Scala will help Skoda to change from a volume manufacturer to a global player". A retractable tow bar, which can be electrically unlocked at the push of a button in the boot, will be available an optional extra. A hotter 1.5 litre four-cylinder TSI (basically the VW 1.5 litre TSI EA211 evo, comes with Active Cylinder Technology) making 150 PS and 250 Nm is also available.
Bolstering the technological side of the Scala are standard fit lane assist and front assist (autonomous emergency braking) as well as the longer-range side assist and adaptive cruise control and optional full-LED adaptive headlights and multi-collision braking.
Five- and six-speed manuals and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will be offered, depending on the powerplant. Its 2649-mm wheelbase is also slightly longer than the Spaceback's, and that translates into a more spacious cabin further optimised by switching to MQB A0 underpinnings.
Plus, the hatchback will be offered with a 90-horsepower 1.0-liter engine G-TEC, which can consume as liquefied natural gas, and gasoline.
