Latest Pharmacy News: NHS Long Term Plan envisages 'essential role' for pharmacists

NHS 10-year plan launched in bid to save 500000 lives NHS looks to digital and genomics to secure its future

It will guarantee the future of the NHS for the next generation. The NHS 10-year plan is the first long-term plan of its kind in almost two decades, since Tony Blair unveiled a new "fundamental" blueprint for NHS reform, which included a maximum six-month waiting time limit for referral for inpatient procedures, free fruit for infant school children, and an increase in funding for NHS staff in 2000.

It's worth taking a moment to reflect on when the NHS was first proposed from this dispatch box by Churchill's Government in 1944.

Ten years before we knew the structure of DNA, 4 decades before the first MRI.

The plan, which will lead to "world class care" for patients according to Prime Minister Theresa May will outline how the £20bn extra funding by 2024 promised will be spent.

"The NHS is already short of 100,000 doctors, nurses and other staff".

This will help address today's challenges. In April 2019, the NHS will assess services across England to establish which towns and cities need extra help. Every day, the NHS treats over 1 million people. The 10-year plan will only affect NHS England.

Despite record demand, performance was better this December than last.

"We welcome the new commitments on prevention and mental health in the NHS long-term plan".

At the heart of this plan is the principle that prevention is better than cure.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: The whole objective of the NHS has to shift to helping people stay healthy as much as helping them when they are ill, as part of a move to prevention rather than cure.

That means patients will have improved access to their Global Positioning System and greater flexibility about how they contact them. NHS will work with community pharmacists and other partners to provide opportunities for the public to check on their health, through tests for high blood pressure and other high-risk conditions.

More support for people with long term conditions through mobile monitoring devices and the interoperability of data.

Staff will receive better training and more help with career progression.

Importantly it will also ensure good mental health is seen as vital as good physical health.

We will build on work already going on to recruit, train and retain more staff so we can address critical staff shortages.

Genomics, digital tech and artificial intelligence are at the forefront of the government's long term plan for the NHS, unveiled today.

Mrs May said that the ambitions set out in the plan, which several experts warned would be hard to achieve, was affordable in part because the United Kingdom would no longer be sending "vast annual sums" to Brussels after it leaves the European Union.

Mr Speaker, that is the approach we will be taking to support the NHS over the next decade, but what does it mean for patients and the wider public?

Supporting our growing elderly population to stay healthy and independent for longer.

It includes 10 priorities and 10 milestones for digital healthcare, with the broad promise that at the end of the next decade, there will be "an NHS where digital access to services is widespread". Despite the 2bn increase to the existing £12bn a year now spent on mental health services in England, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPS) previously expressed concern that this figure is only half what is needed for the NHS to put spending more on par with that of physical health. We are especially pleased to see more support for young people's mental health where additional resources for core services and those that support the transition to adult services are much needed.

A year ago a report found that using AI to diagnose scans for heart disease and lung cancer could save the NHS billions.

The organisation warned that health and social care services relied heavily on staff from the European Economic Area (EEA), and estimated more than 5 per cent of the regulated nursing profession, 5 per cent of allied health professionals, 9 per cent of doctors and 16 per cent of dentists came from inside the EEA. As up to 10 percent of hospital admissions in the elderly population are medicines-related, pharmacists will routinely work in general practice helping to relieve pressure on Global Positioning System and supporting care homes.

NHS England said the money could save around 500,000 lives by preventing life-threatening diseases such as strokes, heart problems and cancer by detecting them earlier.

And I am proud to commend this statement to the House.
