Cancer deaths hit milestone, a 25-year decline

Cancer rates in the USA have been dropping steadily for 25 years, according to a new report from the American Cancer Society.

Cancer is the second-leading killer in the U.S., and it's poised to soon pass heart disease for that top slot. The rates of death caused by most forms of cancer are declining - especially lung cancers, thanks to public-health efforts that have reduced smoking rates. The study says that those figures translate into roughly 2.6 million fewer cancer deaths over that time period.

Data were collected from 47 states and the District of Columbia for this report.

A World Health Organization report released in September estimated that there were 18.1 million new cancer cases and 9.6 million cancer deaths worldwide in 2018 alone.

Lung cancer death rates declined 48% from 1990 to 2016 among men and 23% from 2002 to 2016 among women. The death rate for female breast cancer dropped by 40% from 1989 to 2016. Obesity-related cancer deaths are rising, and prostate cancer deaths are no longer dropping, said Rebecca Siegel, lead author of the American Cancer Society report published Tuesday. From 2011 to 2015, the rates of new lung cancer cases dropped by 3% per year in men and 1.5% per year in women. "No insurance or low-coverage insurance also reduces the incentive to visit the doctor for symptoms and even more for preventive health practices, such as smoking cessation, yearly physicals, and immunizations against cancer-causing viruses". However, in adults younger than age 55, new cases of colorectal cancer have increased nearly 2% per year since the mid-1990s.

Paskett pointed out that "we have made great strides". Socioeconomic inequalities are widening, although the racial gap in cancer mortality is narrowing slowly, according to the researchers. That gap has narrowed from a peak of 33% in 1993. Several factors affect the differences among racial and ethnic groups, including socioeconomic status (SES).

Some of the counties with the highest poverty are in rural areas of south Georgia, and "this is something that we've become aware of here at the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University", Curran said.

The falling rates are because people are smoking less and because advances in medical technology are improving early detection and treatment, said experts cited by The Associated Press. Socioeconomic deprivation was, prior to the mid-1980s, linked with lower cancer mortality; rates of colorectal cancer in men in the poorest USA counties were approximately 20% lower than those in affluent counties in early 1970s, but are 35% higher today. But now obesity accounts for a third of liver cancer deaths, and is more of a factor than hepatitis, Siegel said. "There were 114 cases under the age of 50 (in the study), and there are some 16,000 cases a year of colorectal cancer of people under the age of 50 in the U.S.", Weber said. Colorectal cancer mortality dropped by 53% from 1970 to 2016.
