"We are taking decisive action to help deliver long-term growth, in the face of multiple geopolitical and regulatory disruptions as well as technology challenges facing the automotive industry", BBC quoted JLR's chief executive Ralf Speth as saying. VW officials also have repeatedly emphasized the only way to make electric cars a mass-market product is through economies of scale to make them as affordable as diesel vehicles.

"Our support for the plant on its road to modernisation becomes even more critical in this context".

The US carmaker is understood to be planning 1,150 jobs cuts, including 1,000 at its Bridgend engine plant, with the rest falling at its transport division, affecting lorry drivers around the country.

In the first nine months of 2018, Ford reported European losses of $199 million, compared to a profit of $278 million in the same period of 2017.

'There are a number of factors behind this grim news - the main ones being challenging market conditions for car-makers generally, a lack of a coherent industrial strategy from the United Kingdom government and the uncertainty created by Brexit'. An improvement in management structure, announced in December, already is underway through Ford's redesign of its global salaried workforce, that will improve the agility of the organization. The company's move follows plans announced previous year to reduce white-collar jobs across the company's global business. As with many other carmakers, Ford warned it wouldn't meet its targets for 2018, and Hackett abandoned a goal to reach an 8 percent profit margin by 2020.

Armstrong also said the company would focus on its most appealing models and exit its less profitable models.

Ford is now going to talk to unions about measures to reduce costs.

"There'll be significant impact across the region", Armstrong said.

"Unite is fully committed to opposing any compulsory redundancies and campaigning strongly for Bridgend to have a viable future".

The automaker employs approximately 54,000 people in Europe.

Jaguar Land Rover was not far behind Ford in announcing it will consolidate European operations in an effort to find an answer to falling sales, spurred on by slowing sales in China, a lack of interest in diesel engines and a move away from sedans to SUVs.

He cautioned that whatever action the company takes might have to be significantly more dramatic should a no-deal Brexit occur at the end of March.

The automaker now has about 53,000 people working at its wholly-owned facilities across Europe primarily in the United Kingdom, Spain, and German.

Every Ford nameplate from the all-new Ford Focus onwards will include an electrified option. "Building on last year's investment in their key plants in Solihull and Halewood to build the next generation of Land Rover models, including electric vehicles".
