PC shipments declined in 2018 for 7th consecutive year

Gartner: Not a very merry Christmas for PC market as chip shortage bites, small biz vanishes PC sales struggle yet again

"We expect this demand will be pushed forward into 2019 if CPU availability improves", noted Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner. The demand existed, the market research firm says, only that the said shortage "affected vendors' ability to fulfill demand created by business PC upgrades".

Gartner has published a report detailing preliminary estimates of PCs shipped worldwide for the final quarter of 2018 and for the year as a whole.

According to the new report from Gartner, worldwide PC shipments totaled 68.6 million units in Q4 of 2018 which is a 4.3% decline from Q4 of 2017.

According to Gartner's latest shipment figures for the last quarter of 2018, shipments dropped 4.3 per cent compared to the same quarter in previous year.

"The fourth quarter is typically oriented toward consumer promotions that help drive the industry's biggest quarter of the year, but the confluence of events in 2018 led to the lowest sequential growth for a holiday quarter since the fourth quarter of 2012", explained IDC.

Nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas joined Imam in the middle, and the pair guided to stumps with no further wickets falling. Hashim Amla was content to play a supporting role and made 22 not out in a partnership which was worth 102 at lunch.

Also weighing on the market were political and economic uncertainties among small- and midsize businesses. In regard to 4Q18, the global market was dominated by three vendors: Lenovo, HP, and Dell.

Apple's market share of 7.2 percent was a distant fourth, declining 3.8 percent on 4.9 million units shipped. There was even uncertainty in the USA - where the overall economy has been strong - among vulnerable buyer groups, such as small and midsize businesses (SMBs).

IDC had shipments for the year flat (258 million) at -0.4 percent and places HP ahead of Lenovo at the top, but it did say US-China tensions could cause more problems. Dell, in contrast, had the strongest year-over-year growth among the top five OEMs with a 1.6 percent increase in quarterly shipments. "Holiday sales are no longer a major factor driving consumer demand for PCs". After the Chinese vendor, HP came second with a 22.4 percent share, a decline of 4.4 percent.

"The market stabilisation in 2018 was attributed to consistent business PC growth, driven by Windows 10 upgrade".

IDC, which ranked the top four PC makers in the same order, recorded similar shipping and market share figures.
