Negotiations between the White House and Democrats dramatically broke down last week, with Trump abruptly leaving a White House Situation Room meeting with top lawmakers when Democrats said they wouldn't give him money for the wall.

The paper reported law enforcement officials became concerned after Mr Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in May 2017 and said the agency had to consider whether the president's actions constituted a possible threat to national security. "We will be out for a long time unless the Democrats come back from their "vacations" and get back to work". Democrats reject that characterization and continue to prepare a response to an emergency declaration that would involve recourse to the courts.

The government shutdown is now the longest in American history, with no apparent end in sight.

But Trump has turned his single-minded push for more walls into a political crusade that opponents say is a stunt to stoke xenophobia in his right-wing voter base while willfully ignoring the border's complex realities.

"I don't want to speak for the president, I don't want to lock him in, but I am confident what I just described with a few other things would be a deal acceptable to the White House and a lot of Democrats", Graham said.

He tweeted: "I do have a plan on the Shutdown".

Around a quarter of the federal government remains out of operation, with 800,000 employees unpaid for more than three weeks.

"At some point, this kind of behaviour will switch economic psychology and cause an economic slowdown so I hope these guys get it together shortly". Senator Dick Durbin of IL, the No. 2 Democrat in the chamber, said on ABC's "This Week" that "one phone call" from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could get the ball rolling to reopen the government.

Trump has been counseled by outside advisers to move toward declaring a national emergency for the "crisis" that he says exists at the southern border. He again sought to blame Democrats, who he said were "everywhere but Washington as people await their pay". "The Republican-controlled Senate and a handful of senators will make that decision". On Sunday, Trump acknowledged, at least indirectly, the mounting costs of the shutdown.

The White House has suggested building the wall with steel rather than concrete as a key concession.

It was the second-highest figure ever given to a player in year one of arbitration, behind only Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs. His record-setting deal will establish the new standard for players with four-plus years of Major League Baseball service time.

He was one of 19 law enforcers, faith leaders and elected officials invited to a White House meeting Friday to discuss border security with President Donald Trump, who took the opportunity to attack Democratic refusal to fund a wall.

The Post-ABC poll said a slight majority (54 percent) opposes construction of the wall, with 42 percent favoring it. CNN's poll said the split against was 56-39.

In the Democrats' weekly address, Representative Scott Peters, who represents a district in San Diego County, California, outlined border security measures such as radar and surveillance via drones, and said "let's re-open the government and talk about these ideas".

"What we don't want to do is waste taxpayer money on a vanity project that's ineffective that the president said Mexico would pay for, " Kaine said.

The shutdown on Saturday exceeded the 1995-1996 funding lapse, when Democrat Bill Clinton was president and Newt Gingrich was speaker of the House.

In Miami, an entire airport terminal will be closed this weekend because of a shortage of security workers.

As the shutdown drags into a fourth week, each side has blamed the other. The proportion of TSA workers on unscheduled leave on Saturday was 5.6 percent, compared with 3.3 percent on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, TSA spokesman Michael Bilello said in a tweet.

As the shutdown has continued, both the House and Senate have approved legislation that would provide back pay to federal workers once the shutdown ends. Trump has said he'll sign it. "I think we're talking days, not weeks", the chairman and founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus said.

Eight Republicans also broke rank to vote with the Democrats last week to restore funding to the Treasury Department and the IRS.
