US Pentagon developed plans to strike Iran, Wall Street Journal reports

Pentagon officials ‘rattled’ by Trump White House request for military options to attack Iran: report White House Requested Military Options to Attack Iran, Rattling Officials

The plans follow increased tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with Washington slapping Tehran with crippling oil sanctions following the USA pulling out of the Iranian nuclear treaty.

The request came after militants, reportedly backed by Iran, fired rockets toward the U.S. consulate in Basra and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad's diplomatic green zone in September.

It is not known if Trump knew about the request made to the Pentagon.

President Donald Trump's National Security Council, led by National Security Adviser John Bolton, asked the Pentagon to develop options for a military strike against Iran previous year, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday citing unnamed current and former US officials.

He said the Pentagon's activities include "routinely reviewing and updating plans and activities to deal with a host of threats, including those posed by Iran, to deter and, if necessary, to respond to aggression".

Speaking to an audience of anti-Tehran activists, the longtime Iran hawk said: "The murderous regime and its supporters will face significant consequences if they do not change their behaviour".

The Wall Street Journal reported in December that the rocket company was planning to raise the funds at a $30.5 billion valuation. However, there are more than 400 open positions in various fields at different SpaceX facilities, judging by the company's.

Last year, Bolton quickly pulled the US out of the nuclear-containment deal brokered during the Obama administration and tightened economic sanctions against Iran - moves that were championed on the campaign trail in 2016 by then-candidate Trump. The US blamed Iran for the attack, despite Tehran's categorical denial.

A White House statement at the time read: "Iran did not act to stop these attacks by its proxies in Iraq, which it has supported with funding, training, and weapons". "America will respond swiftly and decisively in defense of American lives", it added.

Mr. Bolton's request reflects the administration's more confrontational approach toward Tehran, one that he has pushed since taking up the post last April.

Pompeo told Fox News that dozens of countries would attend the summit which would aim to "build out the global coalition" opposed to Iranian policies in the region.

Mr Rouhani's comments prompted Mr Trump to fire off a furious tweet in capital letters.
