Last year's Players Championship saw the 17th claim 54 balls and along with them a few title hopes. - Coming off one of his worst putting performances in Mexico, Tiger Woods asked for some outside help at The Players Championship.

It's not the first time Woods has asked someone to look at him.

With a win this week, Woods would tie Jack Nicklaus for the most Players victories.

Jim Furyk described the par-three 17th as the place where golfing ghouls come "to watch the vehicle wreck" and there was plenty of carnage during the opening round to satisfy the massive gallery at the Island Green as 14 balls hit the drink.

'Everything is good, Woods told Golfweek. "But I drove it so well I was always in a good position".

Woods will be grouped with last year's victor Webb Simpson and 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed, teeing off for round one at 1:27pm EST (1727 GMT) tomorrow.

Englishman Fleetwood - a star of last year's Ryder Cup - made a superb start to the week as he carded a seven-under 65 to move into the lead ahead of Byeong Hun An.

He was in a greenside bunker in two shots, but took two attempts to get out of the sand, and three more to hole out. His hole-in-one is the ninth in the history of THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass' island green. The first was recorded by Hunter Mahan in the second round of The Players in 2007.

In order to adapt TPC Sawgrass to the weather conditions, the entire course was overseeded with ryegrass.

Since 2003, Australian Aaron Baddeley has put a record 13 balls into the water while Phil Mickelson and Bob Tway have dunked nine apiece.

'The course here is in spectacular shape with very little rough, much like Augusta!

Mickelson, who missed the cut during last week's Arnold Palmer, added, 'If I remember correctly, the week before I won at Pebble I missed the cut.
