The company is now fighting two asbestos-related lawsuits in New Jersey and Oklahoma courts, and two more trials could begin this month, the UBS analysts said. In December a year ago, the company reiterated the safety of its products as a slew of drug regulators around the world such as the US FDA and India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) analysed samples of J&J products. "We respect the legal process and reiterate that jury verdicts are not medical, scientific or regulatory conclusions about a product".

A California jury has ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $29 million to a woman with mesothelioma who claimed that asbestos in the conglomerate's talcum powder products caused her cancer.

But while talc is used for the skin, thanks to its moisture-absorbing properties, asbestos was used for insulation.

Asbestos is made up of six minerals that form together as crystalline fibers.

About 8 out of 10 people with mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos.

"'They knew there was asbestos in it, and for me that's the worst part because they failed to warn the consumer", said Kate Alessandri, an Oakland librarian.

They can cause inflammation, scarring, damage cells' DNA, cause changes that result in uncontrolled cell growth.

It is one of the most mysterious cancers, and it's not clear why asbestos travels to ovarian tissues, but it is well-documented.

A jury in California determined that Johnson & Johnson baby powder was a "substantial contributing factor" to Teresa Leavitt's mesothelioma, and awarded her $29 million.

The jury deliberated for two days before delivering its verdict, which was broadcast online by Courtroom View Network. The jury declined to award punitive damages.

Some of its talc products sometimes contained materials that "might be classified as asbestos powder", The New York Times reported, quoting an internal company memo.

Leavitt's trial originally included Johnson & Johnson talc supplier, Imerys Talc America, a unit of Imerys SE, as a co-defendant.

Recent cases have focused on talc's link to mesothelioma, but many additional cases allege the powder has caused ovarian cancer. The company is now embroiled in roughly 13,000 lawsuits brought by people who claim the company's products caused or contributed to serious health issues, the AP reports.

"It's not clear to us the read-through this case has to the other trials or that these decisions will be upheld on appeal (where the technical merits will likely find a more receptive audience than a jury)", the analysts wrote.

The company cited "serious procedural and evidentiary errors" and said it has already moved for a mistrial on eight points.
