Bangladesh cricket team, now touring New Zealand, escaped unscathed after a deadly shooting at a mosque in Christchurch on Friday.

"Our thoughts and honest condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by this horrendous incident in Christchurch".

International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson said the sport's governing body 'fully supports the decision to cancel the test match'. According to Bangladesh Cricket Board President, Jalal Yunus, the players were about to enter the mosque when it happened.

Their team bus was only about 50 yards from the mosque and players were crying and worrying how they would safely get out of the vehicle.

"When any foreign team comes to our country, we always ensure proper security", Mr. Hassan said.

The team's cricketer Tamim Iqbal Khan wrote: "Entire team got saved from active shooters".

"Frightening experience and please keep us in your prayers", he added.

Mazhar Uddin, reporter for Bangladesh based Daily Star, said players lay down on the floor of the bus after being warned away from the mosque.

Bangladesh cricket team performance analyst Shrinivas Chandrasekeran, on the other hand, said: "Just escaped active shooters".

"Hearts pumping badly and panic everywhere".

The Bangladeshi Test cricket team has been caught up in a deadly mass shooting in Christchurch, fleeing from outside a mosque where they had gone for prayers.

Mashud, the former Bangladesh captain and wicketkeeper, said they were inside the bus for "eight to 10 minutes" and sat with their heads bowed "just in case someone fires at us".

All Blacks centre Williams, a devout Muslim, said his "heart is hurting" as he posted an emotional video tribute soon after the attacks.

The incident is said to have taken place at the Al Noor mosque, located in central Christchurch along Dean Avenue facing Hagley Park. At a news conference, Police Commissioner Mike Bush advised "anyone that was thinking of going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand today not to go, to close your doors until you hear from us again".

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden later announced that 40 people were killed and more than 20 injured in the attack, claimed by a 28-year-old white Australian who is in police custody.

"Just deeply, deeply saddened that this would happen in New Zealand".

Earlier, members of the Bangladesh cricket team described on social media their narrow escape from the mass shooting on New Zealand's South Island. They were initially barred from leaving the bus but, after several minutes, disembarked and ran through Hagley Park to the ground.
