Took down one million bad accounts, twice as many bad advertiser accounts in 2017. Bad ads degrade the technology that's the financial lifeblood not only for Google but also for countless websites and apps that rely on Google to place those ads.

As the dominant leader in digital advertising, Google is the primary gatekeeper of how and which types of ads appear online.

"At Google, we take our responsibility to help create a healthy and sustainable advertising ecosystem that works for everyone, seriously". We, at Google, have been working towards protecting the users, advertisers and publishers by investing significant technological resources. Bad actors impact every aspect of the digital ecosystem. The company removed more than 531,000 ads for bail bonds previous year. That affected various abusive ads related to "third-party tech support, ticket resellers, cryptocurrency and local services such as garage door repairmen, bail bonds and addiction treatment facilities", Spencer said.

Last year, Google focused on taking the bad actors behind these bad ads down instead of going directly after the bad ads themselves.

Usually, the number of fraudulent ads (those that advertise fraudulent activity, spread malware or something similar) that Google blocks on a yearly basis rises, year-over-year. It also removed around 58.8 million advertisements for phishing scams from its network. However, the ad giant said the number of advertiser accounts it terminated last year almost doubled from the previous year to almost one million. Similarly, an India-specific Political Advertising Transparency Report and searchable Political Ads Library will go live, before the Lok-Sabha elections in April.

In terms of misinformation, Google removed ads from around 1.2 million pages, over 22,000 apps, and almost 15,000 sites across its ad network for violations of policies directed at misrepresentative, hateful or other low-quality content.

Google can sometimes detect policy violations during the ad creation process. The company said it was able to "take more granular action" by cutting ads from almost 28m pages that violated its publisher policies.
