New Zealand's stricken residents reached out to Muslims in their communities and around the country on Saturday, in a fierce determination to show kindness as a 28-year-old white supremacist stood silently before a judge, accused in mass shootings at two mosques that left 49 people dead.

Brenton Tarrant, in white prison suit, barefooted, handcuffed and flanked by two armed police officers, made a brief appearance in the court for about five minutes.

Tarrant has been remanded in custody until April 5, when he will appear again before the High Court in Christchurch.

Ms Ardern has vowed to change New Zealand's gun laws after confirming Tarrant had obtained a Category A gun licence in November 2017 and "under that, he was able to acquire the guns that he held".

Mr Bainimarama also said his government will be working closely with authorities in New Zealand to monitor the welfare of Fijians in Christchurch.

"We never had any trouble here, it was completely unexpected", says Radhika Kumar, 35, who drove from two hours away to pay her respects. Tarrant said nothing, entered no plea to the charge and did not apply to have his name withheld.

"I can tell you one thing right now, our gun laws will change", Ardern told reporters.

CHRISTCHURCH, March 16 ― The main suspect in New Zealand's worst peacetime mass shooting meant to continue the rampage before he was caught by police, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said today.

Hundreds of people gathered in Nathan Phillips Square Friday evening to remember the victims killed in shootings at two New Zealand mosques. "I guess if you look at what happened in New Zealand perhaps that's a case, I don't know enough about it yet". One more died in hospital, where another 48 wounded are still receiving care, two in a critical condition. A police auto rammed into his white SUV after it sped away from Linwood, pushing the vehicle up and onto the curb, which allowed officers to drag him onto the pavement at gunpoint. Tarrant lived in Dunedin, on New Zealand's South Island, and was a member of the Bruce Rifle Club, according to media reports which quoted club members saying he often practiced shooting an AR-15, which is a lightweight semi-automatic rifle.

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said graves were being dug as city officials worked closely with the community on the specific requirements of a large number of Muslim funerals. Indonesian Muslim leaders expressed anger at the shooting rampage while urging Muslims to show restraint. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden called the shootings a terrorist act, tweeting that such acts have no place in the country.
