Austria's Thiem advanced by walkover to face Canadian Milos Raonic, who defeated Serbian lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4.

Raonic fired 13 aces against no double faults in putting away Kecmanovic in 72 minutes on a sunny, windy and cool day in the Southern California desert.

The seventh seed was due to face Gael Monfils, but the Frenchman withdrew due to an Achilles injury.

Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Venus Williams that took 22 games to decide.

A fact that stood was that not only did Kerber win 68% points off her second serve, she also 62% return points on Williams' second serve. Speaking to reporters after her win, Kerber said, "Venus is just such a great player and an incredible champion". But Kerber held in the next game to force the tiebreaker, which she dominated. This is Kerber's third semi-final in Indian Wells, coming almost six years after her last appearance (in 2013, lost to Caroline Wozniacki).
