"Our view is that if our politicians think they can walk all over us then we will march back to them".

Marchers chanted "we're marching for our freedom" and some described Farage as a great statesman and a fantastic leader.

The march follows several defeats for Prime Minister Theresa May in the United Kingdom parliament this week when MPs rejected her Brexit deal for a second time and voted to seek a delay to Britain's departure from the EU.

The 14-day march, organised by the Leave Means Leave campaign is set to arrive in the capital for a mass rally on March 29, the date the United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the bloc.

Marchers gathered in the rain from the early morning for the first leg, which will take them 20 miles to Hartlepool.

"So the symbolism of Sunderland is strong and this in the week when Parliament is attempting to betray the will of the people in the referendum".

It's due to end at Parliament on March 29, the day the United Kingdom was supposed to leave.

The march's website states: "It is now clear the Westminster elite are preparing to betray the will of the people over Brexit".

Three men carried a large banner emblazoned with the slogan Leave Means Leave, and another man could be seen waving a flag with the message: 'Get Britain Out: Time to leave the European Union'.

However not all went to plan, with a pro-Brussels mob surprising the Brexiteers and shouting them down with slogans supportive of the European Union.

It adds: "Failing to deliver a true Brexit will permanently damage the British people's faith in democracy".

The Leave Means Leave campaign sold tickets to "core marchers" on their website, offering free accommodation, breakfast, dinner and a Leave goody bag if the buyer marched for the entire two weeks.

One Brexiteer waved a blue passport at the Remainers who were carrying red love hearts with messages including "we love workers' rights" and "we love to have a say".
