Previous estimates had indicated a national HIV prevalence of 2.8%.

Speaking in Abuja, Nigeria, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, welcomed the news that there are fewer people living with HIV in the country than previously estimated and launched the Revised National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework 2019-2021, which will guide the country's future response to the epidemic.

He said this would guide the scale up of treatment and prevention services across all age groups.

David Young who is the Charge de Affairs, Embassy of the United States of America, according to Premium Times, said "beyond the data, the survey has proved the capacity of Nigerians working together in solidarity with one another to rise and resolve challenges regarding the health and well-being of their brothers and sisters". I urge all of us not to relent, but to increase the momentum. "Let us work collectively and push for the last mile".

The United states supported the survey with 70 million dollars.

The survey directly measured HIV prevalence and viral load suppression, allowing Nigeria to focus on providing services to the areas with the greatest need to control the HIV epidemic.

According to the report, the number of women living with HIV/AIDS is double the number of men living with the virus.

"For the south-south, (it) is Akwa-Ibom that has the highest prevalence, and, for the North Central, it is still Benue State".

He reportedly started to travel about 2011 after the death of his father, heading to Turkey and Pakistan, as well as the Balkans. NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says despite the attacks being carried out in Christchurch, he had been based in Dunedin.

The report also adds that the North-West has the lowest AIDS prevalence rate at 0.6 per cent, while the South-South geopolitical zone has the highest at 3.1 per cent.

In his remarks, Onyeama said the cooperation agreement was a welcome development since it will enable government to have direct relationship with UNAIDS.

He called for concerted effort to stop HIV in Nigeria, as he noted "if we don't stop HIV in Nigeria, we will never have a generation free of HIV in Africa".

Nigeria has dropped from second to the fourth country worst hit by the Human Immuno Virus (HIV) epidemic in the world, as the results from Nigeria HIV/ AIDs Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS), shows that 1.9 million Nigerians are presently living with the virus.

"This survey is good news, because it is showing clearly that we have less people infected with HIV, less cases of new infection and less death due to HIV".

The new data are more accurate as they are based on an expanded surveillance system and a revised and enhanced methodology.

Giving a further breakdown, the Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Sani Aliyu, explained that the percentage of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in Nigeria, among the age group of 15-49 years, was 1.4 per cent (1.9 per cent among females and 0.9 per cent among males).
