'Nigeria, fourth country with highest HIV/AIDS victims'

Speaking in Abuja, Nigeria, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, welcomed the news that there are fewer people living with HIV in the country than previously estimated and launched the Revised National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework 2019-2021, which will guide the country's future response to the epidemic.
He said this would guide the scale up of treatment and prevention services across all age groups.

The United states supported the survey with 70 million dollars.
The survey directly measured HIV prevalence and viral load suppression, allowing Nigeria to focus on providing services to the areas with the greatest need to control the HIV epidemic.
According to the report, the number of women living with HIV/AIDS is double the number of men living with the virus.
"For the south-south, (it) is Akwa-Ibom that has the highest prevalence, and, for the North Central, it is still Benue State".
The report also adds that the North-West has the lowest AIDS prevalence rate at 0.6 per cent, while the South-South geopolitical zone has the highest at 3.1 per cent.
In his remarks, Onyeama said the cooperation agreement was a welcome development since it will enable government to have direct relationship with UNAIDS.
He called for concerted effort to stop HIV in Nigeria, as he noted "if we don't stop HIV in Nigeria, we will never have a generation free of HIV in Africa".

The new data are more accurate as they are based on an expanded surveillance system and a revised and enhanced methodology.
