Facebook said Friday it took down a livestream of the shootings and removed the shooter's Facebook and Instagram accounts after being alerted by police.

The video footage, posted online live as the attack unfolded, appeared to show him driving to one mosque, entering it and shooting randomly at people inside.

Footage of the attacks was broadcast live to Facebook and then re-shared by users on other platforms.

The Associated Press reports the shooter's reported broadcast lasted about 17 minutes.

Facebook is "removing any praise or support for the crime and the shooter or shooters as soon as we're aware", she said.

Experts said the companies could set their detection tools and removal processes to be more aggressive, but YouTube and Facebook have said they want to be careful not to remove sensitive videos that either come from news organizations or have news value.

Rasty Turek, CEO of Pex, a video analytics platform that is also working on a tool to identify re-uploaded or stolen content with YouTube has told The Verge that it is almost impossible to stop live streams as they happen since the content is always changing.

"We urge people to report all instances to us so our systems can block the video from being shared again".

British tabloid newspapers such as The Daily Mail and The Sun posted screenshots and video snippets on their websites. She rightly called Friday one of New Zealand's "darkest days".

Despite taking swift action, stopping the spread of unverified content may prove to be a tough challenge for Facebook and YouTube.

Stacy Silich, who moved to NZ from Barnstaple, Devon, said: "I can't go into too much detail but I do know someone who was shot".

"We have certain companies that have built systems that have inadvertently served the cause of violent hatred around the world", Vaidhyanathan said.

Shares of Facebook closed down 2.5 percent on Friday.

"The content of the video is disturbing and will be harmful for people to see", the department said.

One Reddit user said in a post they had sent a video of the attack to more than 600 people before having their account temporarily suspended for sharing violent content.

Social networks have been caught flat-footed in many cases by videos showing violent acts including suicides and assassinations.

YouTube, however, later pulled down the video.

"Remember, lads, subscribe to PewDiePie", the gunman said. She said the attacks were shown live on Facebook for 17 minutes before being stopped.

The hours it took to take the violent video and manifesto down are "another major black eye" for social media platforms, said Dan Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities.

He said the company condemned "the actions of these frightful persons and their disgusting use of our app for these purposes".

Silicon Valley was unsuccessful in removing the content completely from their platform even as they tout next-gen AI and machine learning that has been created to stop this very thing from happening. "Subreddits that fail to adhere to those site-wide rules will be banned".

Facebook acted swiftly to contain the fallout.
