Australian Senator Fraser Anning was egged on Saturday, for blaming the New Zealand mosque shootings on Muslim immigration, at an event in Melbourne.

Anning immediately turns and hits the teen in the face, and then hits him again before the two were separated. A spokesperson from Victoria Police told ABC a 17-year-old was arrested but was later released pending further investigation.

A right-wing member of the Australian parliament blamed the murder of 49 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Muslim immigration.

The man was held down and questioned by officials before being led away by police. Videos of the altercation quickly spread on Twitter, where Anning's statement and the subsequent disavowals had introduced the fringe politician to a global audience just one day earlier.

Fraser Anning, independent Senator for Queensland, tweeted: "Does anyone still dispute the link between Muslim immigration and violence?".

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported a fundraising page has been created to cover the boy's legal fees and help him purchase "more eggs".

In a video that has been making rounds on social media, a young boy can be seen smashing an egg over the senator's head as he speaks at a press conference.

Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison was furious on the comments of Anning.

A video of a teenager egging an Australian senator who sparked global outrage with comments that he made about the New Zealand mosque shootings is going viral.

The attacks were perpetrated by an Australian who appears to have white nationalist views.

"Those views have no place in Australia, let alone the Australian Parliament", Morrison said. "He should be, frankly, ashamed of himself", the Aussie premier was quoted as saying.

The egging occurred after Mr Anning released a controversial response in the wake of the Christchurch Mosque massacre on Friday.

"I do wonder if he's made Australians less safe overseas", he told reporters in Melbourne.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten voiced his anger at the comments.

Meanwhile, critics of Australia's far-right platforms have suggested that Anning's comments are motivated by a desire to secure a senatorial election in May.
