Jordan's king cancels Romania visit over Jerusalem embassy plan

Adding to the uncertainty, Romania's centrist president Klaus Iohannis has opposed the move as a breach of worldwide law.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila made the announcement before the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), an influential pro-Israel lobby. Abdullah was scheduled to visit Romania later in the day.

The President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, recounted, "On New Years Day, I met with Prime Minister Netanyahu and Secretary of State Pompeo and our three countries issued a joint statement announcing an action plan that will culminate with Israel opening its embassy in our capital Tegucigalpa and at the same time, reciprocally, the Honduras embassy will be moved to the capital of Israel, the city of Jerusalem".

The move is considered controversial as it goes against the rest of the European Union.

The prime minister of Romania announced on Sunday that her country will move its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem, while the president of Honduras announced the opening of an official diplomatic mission in the city. He has said that in any case, such a shift would require presidential approval, according to AFP.

The announcements were welcomed by Israeli politicians.

Jordan's King Abdullah II has canceled a visit to Romania to protest its prime minister's support for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Erekat said the move "only contributes to eliminating the two-state solution".

Dancila's previous attempt to relocate the embassy, in April 2018, prompted Romanian opposition leader and National Liberal Party leader Ludovic Orban to file a criminal complaint against her for visiting Israel and hiding information from Lohannis.

Worldwide consensus holds that the status of Jerusalem - one of the thorniest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - must first be decided through negotiations between the two sides.

Israel occupied east Jerusalem in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the global community.

Israel sees the entire city of Jerusalem as its capital while the Palestinians consider the eastern sector annexed by Israel as the capital of their future state.
