The 23-year-old was playing a doubles match alongside American Taylor Fritz in Miami on Sunday, when the pair were defeated by Portugal's Joao Sousa and Argentina's Guido Pell 10-8 in a nail biting third set tiebreak. Kyrgios asked the spectator.

After the first, Kyrgios exchanged words with a member of the crowd, who apparently made fun of the Australian's haircut.

"He literally just said, 'You're a dick, '" Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios went on to comfortably win the match against Dusan Lajovic.

Kyrgios laughed as he traded barbs with the spectator, who stood and appeared to gesture for the Australian to come closer, while the unfortunate woman sitting next to him looked like she wished she was elsewhere.

In response, Kyrgios had another crack: "Sunday night, and you're still out here watching me?"

'Bro, where's your fam?' sniped Kyrgios.

As security escorted the man from the court a short time later, Kyrgios waved goodbye and the crowd cheered.

Post-match, Kyrgios gave his side of the story as to what caused the brouhaha.

The Australian world No.27 was far too strong for his Serbian opponent, slamming 12 aces and winning 81 per cent of first-serve points.

Kyrgios will play Croatia's Borna Ćorić, who downed Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in a topsy-turvy three-setter. "You just got, I don't know, just got idiots like that in the crowd that got nothing else to do on a Sunday night but watch me play, yet they talk to me as if they're not interested in watching when they literally have nothing else to do but sit there and watch me".

"I had a bit of fun with it", Kyrgios said. I loved it, I loved every single bit of it.

"I think tennis needs stuff like this, to be honest", he said. I thought they saw some great tennis as well.

'Just give me the answer. I don't understand it. I knew that I was going to get him kicked out. However, the Aussie spilled the beans.

"And then he was like, 'You're a dick, ' and said it again".

"And I was like, "okay, I don't quite understand the context of it". You got nothing else to do on a Sunday night?

The commentators said the man had told Kyrgios: "get a new haircut".

"Then he was like, "Come here and say it".
