"We are investigating if any civilians were killed or wounded", he said.

The bodies were brought into Kunduz city in the back of a truck as part of protests by dozens of civilians against the deaths.

The civilian deaths occurred as Afghan and Taliban forces claimed to inflict heavy losses on each other in that province and in Helmand, two Taliban strongholds. Child casualties from air strikes have increased every year since 2014.

Resolute Support, comprising troops from 39 countries, trains, advises and assists Afghan security forces.

The air strike early on Saturday was part of a battle between the Taliban and the combined Afghan-US forces that lasted about 30 hours in Kunduz, a northern province where the Taliban is strong.

The Taliban historically mass men, weapons and equipment in small villages around the city in preparation for attacks on Kunduz City, she said, adding that it became clear after the forces landed near the village that Taliban fighters were pre-staged in defensive fighting positions. This was followed by Taliban fighters on either side of the checkpoint shooting at them. "The Taliban were hiding in civilian homes and maneuvered in and out of compounds without any concern for the families living inside", said Sgt. 1st Class Debra Richardson.

Four Afghan soldiers died in the fight, a senior Afghan military source said.

On Friday, two American service members were killed during an operation in Kunduz province.

Fighting has accelerated during a period of recurring peace talks.

The attack came a day after two United States soldiers and four Afghan troops were killed during a joint operation in Gul Tepa, a district on the outskirts of Kunduz city.

Taliban's five-year rule over at least three quarters of Afghanistan came to an end in the wake of a US-led invasion in 2001, but the militant group still continues to attack government and civilian targets as well as foreign forces.

The Taliban on Saturday claimed an attack at a stadium celebration of Farmers Day in Helmand, which killed four people and wounded 31, including minor injuries to the province's governor. Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said the two outposts were over-run, killing 52 Afghan troops and wounding 11 more.

The provincial governor, Mohammad Yasin Khan, was knocked over by the blasts before he was quickly removed from the celebration, according to a Reuters witness.
