Libyan Haftar's Army Confirms Loss of Jet, Suspects GNA in Downing - Statement

Steven Clarke | 15 Апреля, 2019, 04:54

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi met with Hafter in Cairo on Sunday, the presidency said.

In March 2016, GNA chief Fayez al-Sarraj arrived in Tripoli to set up a new government, but the Haftar-allied administration in the eastern city of Tobruk refused to recognise its authority.

The presidency released photos showing Haftar, dressed in a blue suit, sitting with Sisi and his head of intelligence Abbas Kamel.

Analysts believe the campaign on Tripoli could potentially reignite large-scale fighting among the country's rival powers and undermine global efforts to reunite the fractured North African nation.

"On Sunday, GNA military spokesman Mohammed Ghnounou told Sputnik that forces loyal to the GNA leadership had downed a warplane belonging to Haftar's army". It did not specify whether they were fighters or civilians.

Fighting in recent days has been taking place on the outskirts of Tripoli as LNA forces have been bogged down by groups aligned with the Government of National Accord (GNA).

Haftar, who was exiled in the United States for two decades, returned to Libya in 2011 when the revolution erupted, commanding forces that eventually toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Islamist militants have since controlled large parts of the vast country, including the capital Tripoli.

Fighting near Tripoli has killed 121 people and wounded 561 since strongman Khalifa Haftar launched an offensive earlier this month to take the Libyan capital, the World Health Organisation said Sunday.

The fighting has killed 121 people, mainly fighters, and wounded another 561, according to United Nations tallies.

WHO's Libya Twitter account posted an update of "casualties" and said it was "sending medical supplies, health staff support for first- and second-line responders".

At least 15,700 people have been forced to flee their homes because of the conflict, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), with a "significant number" of others still stuck in live conflict zones.

Medical personnel have been targeted in the clashes, with three medical workers killed and eight ambulances damaged since fighting began, according to the UN.

Both sides have been accused of targeting civilians, the Daily Sabah reported.

"The humanitarian community repeats its warning that continuing to attack medical and civilian facilities is a violation of worldwide humanitarian law and human rights law", OCHA said in a statement.
