This comes after Bashir, who came to power as a result of a coup in 1989 and ruled the country for 30 years, was himself toppled on 11 April by the military amid anti-government protests.

Troops had gathered on three sides of the sit-in and tractors were preparing to remove stone and metal barriers, but protesters joined hands and formed rings around the sit-in area to prevent them.

The protesters, numbering about 5,000 with more arriving, chanted "Freedom, freedom" and "Revolution, revolution", and appealed to the army to protect them, Reuters reported.

"We hope that everyone will head immediately to the areas of the sit-in to protect your revolution and your accomplishments", the SPA said.

The protesters say they can not believe the transitional military council's promise of easing its grip on the country.

Since then, the heads of the military council and of Sudan's powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) have both been replaced, as protesters have continued to call for change.

In a televised speech, Burhan said the country's two-year transitional period will end with free and fair elections and vowed to put on trial those involved in the killing of the protesters as well as corruption under the old regime. It has also called on the opposition to pick the next prime minister.

Protesters for Sudanese democracy have thwarted a bid by security forces to end their sit-in outside the defence headquarters in Khartoum.

But in a press conference later, the council's spokesman did not respond to the protesters' latest demands, although he did announce the appointment of a new intelligence chief of the NISS.

The talks came a day after the embassies of Britain, the United States and Norway issued a joint statement saying the "legitimate change" the Sudanese people demanded had not taken place.

During the meeting, Daqlo briefed the USA envoy on developments in Sudan and the reasons behind the formation of the transitional military council, the council said in a statement.

Himeidti is the head of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary anti-insurgency force with its origins in the Janjaweed militias of the Darfur conflict.

Protest leaders say their demands include restructuring the country's feared NISS agency, whose chief Salih Ghosh resigned on Saturday.

The SPA has also called for the confiscation of properties belonging to the ousted president's National Congress Party and the release of soldiers who sided with their movement.

A new interim civilian body should be given full executive powers, with the armed forces having representation, and the Transitional Military Council (TMC) that took over last week should be dissolved, the SPA said.
