The tweet is now "pinned" to the top of Trump's Twitter feed, and has been shared 86,000 times.

What followed was a vicious cycle of thunderous conservative indignation, complete with President Donald Trump tweeting a video mashing up Omar's remarks with footage the planes hitting the Twin Towers, followed by an overreaching liberal backlash against the backlash, in which Democratic presidential contenders Beto O'Rourke and Sen.

Neither Trump's tweet nor the video included Omar's full quote or the context of her comments, which were about Muslims feeling that their civil liberties had eroded after the attacks.

"Before Nancy, who has lost all control of Congress and is getting nothing done, decides to defend her leader, Rep. Omar, she should look at the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and ungrateful U.S. HATE statements Omar has made", Trump tweeted.

In her full remarks to CAIR, Omar addressed the fear and restricted civil liberties faced by the Muslim American community in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Pelosi said officials would continue to monitor and assess threats against Omar, and called on Trump to discourage such behaviour. "And what Donald Trump is doing is he is making life unsafe not just for her, but for other Muslim Americans".

It is natural to disagree with politicians, but no matter how opposed one is to their values, inciting violence against them through misinformation - as Trump did with his video - is never OK.

Earlier in the day, the White House denied Trump is inciting violence and Islamophobia.

Sanders, however, defended Trump Sunday, telling ABC news: "The president is wishing no ill will and certainly not violence toward anyone".

Workers at the airport stopped the man, and he was taken into custody by Phoenix Police officers without incident. He fell about 10 feet and suffered injuries described as minor.

Critics accuse Omar of being flippant in describing the perpetrators of the attacks that killed almost 3000 people.

Perhaps the saddest and most infuriating part of this is that the response to Rep. Omar's speech proves her point exactly.

Pelosi, in Europe leading a delegation, on Monday said the president should not use 9/11 as a political tool.

Bush had said, "The people - the people who knocked those buildings down will hear all of us soon".

In the latest incident, Trump posted a video to his 60 million Twitter followers that used a short snippet of an Omar speech followed by images of the burning Twin Towers in NY in 2001.

The top congressional Democrat used an appearance at the London School of Economics to set out a centrist vision that could help woo Republican voters frustrated with Trump's approach. Astoundingly, Omar referred to these events as "some people who did something".

She is also a member of appropriation and foreign policy committees at the U.S. Congress. "The bigger question is why aren't Democrats doing the same thing?"

Given that Omar, a proud-scarf-wearing-Black-Muslim-refugee-from-Somalia, says what no one in the establishment ever wants to hear, the right wing media have found it imperative to skew and distort her words at any given opportunity.

She previously came under fire for her comments about Israel and the strength of the Jewish state's influence in Washington.
